New U2 Song – Ordinary Love (Snippet)

After all the hoopla from U2.com‘s email to subscribers to its official website, we were able to gain an early preview of a trailer to Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which features a new U2 soundtrack song called “Ordinary Love“.  The movie is scheduled for public distribution in the US on November 29, 2013, and presumably the Original Soundtrack will be unveiled around the same time, if not sooner.  The song’s release should be ahead of the December 9, 2013 deadline for the Golden Globe’s Best Original Original Song.  Distributing “Ordinary Love” before the end of November would also qualify U2 for the Oscar’s Original Song, with a deadline of December 2, 2013.

It seems this timeline would give U2 early media exposure.  A nomination (or win) at the 2014 Golden Globes (January 12, 2014) and Oscars (March 2, 2014) would give U2 the profile and platform to promote their new album, which is to be released “sometime early next year.”

While it was disappointing to not get the full song, we were given a teaser.  From what I’ve been able to make out, the lyrics in this snippet are as follows:

The sea wants to kiss the golden shore
The sunlight warms your skin
All the beauty that’s been lost before
Wants to find us again

We can’t fall any further in
We can’t feel with ordinary love
We cannot reach any higher
We can’t feel with ordinary love

We can’t fall any further in
We can’t feel with ordinary love

Ordinary love…
Ordinary love…

The full version of “Ordinary Love” will be released in U2.com and YouTube on October 30, 2013.
