U2’s Tribute to Nelson Mandela
As long back as 1986 when Bono had been part of the “Artists United Against Apartheid” who performed Sun City – a protest song against Apartheid in South Africa – the band had a strong link to the global movement behind freeing Nelson Mandela. As a backgrounder, Sun City was a resort in South Africa that catered to wealthy white tourists. Many famous entertainers performed at Sun City despite the racist Apartheid policy. Artists United Against Apartheid was organized by “Little Steven” Van Zandt, who discovered Sun City when he traveled to Africa after leaving Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band in 1985.
The Weinstein Company – the group that distributed the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom movie – quietly put out a video of U2 paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.
